“Bob” was an example of a fellow living on substitutes. I can still see him as he walked into my office. About twenty-one, he was tall, masculine and alert. His eyes shifted around the room, then settled on me.
Suspecting Bob of using and peddling dope, the police had planted a “girl friend” at a local drive-in. She played the game just right. After a few sessions Bob began to see how his trouble started. He was starved for love and affection and felt that no one had a place for him. So he joined a gang. As time went on, he got a little of what he had always wanted — friendship and affection. But this ”love-substitute” carried a terrible price tag — minor crimes, needles, arrest, shame and a possible prison term, plus a host of other vile things. But he was willing to take the chance just to have the recognition and love that his heart so badly craved.
Many cases are not as severe as this dope addict. But some are.
